I feel your pain. I've all but stopped posting, the new 'improved' site was the final straw.

PS. I feel bad about "Like"-ing this. It's not that I 'like' it, I am expressing my opinion that this is an important post.

    • Oct 19 at 07:09 PM

And I feel bad about liking it too and about liking your comment as well. But yeah, that's just "me too" rather than "oh, me likey, finally I can post that blog about the virtues of FAE".

      • Oct 19 at 10:52 PM

not much to like but just to bookmark for future reference, if i find it relevant once it's 'seasoned'. a 'favorite' worked for me on twtr, but it wasn't social enough for the platform so now they are all about likes, too.

i found a better tool on this platform to cue me in, but 'i'm not telling'.

I'm exactly the same. Haven't posted, haven't blogged, and now that SAP has lowered the professional criteria to post, I basically don't moderate anymore. Personally, I've never gotten much in return from SCN but was fine to make a contribution. That's how these public forums work for experienced folks and I was fine with that. But I don't see much of a road in front of me anymore.

  • Oct 17 at 08:39 AM

We talked about this and i totally understand you.

I guess how long it takes to the upper floors to understand the mistakes they are collecting.

Or maybe this is by design...

    • Oct 22 at 02:38 PM

Can't help but believe it is by design. But then occasionally I am reminded of Hanlon's Razor.

      • Oct 22 at 03:08 PM
occasionally I am reminded of Hanlon's Razor

Not sure whether that would make it better or worse:)

        • Nov 07 at 06:17 PM

Me either, but I think the razor has been doing a lot of shaving around here in the past few years.

  • Oct 17 at 09:02 AM

I'd like to help but am missing some context, so not really sure how (or if) that's even possible.

Being an eternal optimist I really hope that there's a way to tackle and correct the underlying issues. I'd hate to see the community disintegrate.

    • Oct 17 at 09:08 AM

      Very simple:

The design of new Community was bad from the very beginning. And instead of improvements new layout in September introduced new "feature" - no more hierarchy in comments, making answering questions close to impossible.

      • Oct 17 at 09:19 AM

I'm aware of that discussion, yes and had chimed in with a comment agreeing with you and others that the change was for the worse and not better.

But, do you know that this is what prompted Matt's thread? As he doesn't state a reason, I think that speculating on what it might be is basically "jumping to conclusions" as there could well be other reasons.

        • Oct 17 at 09:26 AM

For sure, there are a lot of other reasons including new moderation rules, new bugs etc. But in general I see that SAP is not listening to the Community contributors. And absence of common sense!

        • Oct 19 at 02:13 PM

To put it diplomatically (although war is considered by some to be an extension of diplomacy), I no longer feel aligned with the direction that SAP wish to take SDN.. .er... SCN... er... SN.

SAP has significantly changed the rules for moderation. In the shortest possible way to explain it... in the past, the post had to be professional. i.e., how two professionals would correspond with one another over an issue. Now, all of the rules that constructed that framework have changed. Basically, unless a post has expletives or is someone blatantly trying to sell something, we can't reject it. Look at this post:

          https://answers.sap.com/questions/687356/i-face-this-problem.html

  • Oct 17 at 05:13 PM

I'll still hang around to answer any questions that I deem worthy of my support. :-D

  • Oct 19 at 07:30 PM

I feel this is another loss for the SAP community (lowercase intentional). Even worse, I'm not even surprised to hear this.

Back in 2000, right before leaving to work in the US I hoped I won't be back, so I went around to see most of the old friends and acquaintances to say goodbye. Everyone was asking how did I get a job, what am I going to do there, etc. Not a single person asked why I was leaving. Everyone knew exactly why. Most also said they'd leave if they had an opportunity.

Here is the population chart for my former home country:

One can only hope that fate of SCN will be different. Unlike my home country, at least I used to like this place...

As a fellow ex-Moderator it is an adjustment. I used to clean up content of send beginners a DM to help them out. I have don't have the rights anymore to do that

It does give me more time to read blogs and contribute where I want to :)

  • Oct 22 at 07:40 AM

Well, for some dumb reason there is hardly any moderating on this site nowadays. A week ago I alerted a moderator that someone had the audacity to post a blatant spec dump, no questions, no indication of a search and my alert was nullified and the post was accepted.

    • Oct 22 at 08:14 AM

I just got notification that my alert had been rejected (wrong tag), but when I checked the post, the tag was changed to the correct one! (Although all the sub tags are still irrelevant).

The issue is that on the mod console the options are to delete the post or reject the alert - nothing else. Which is a bit dumb. Or maybe I missed the training...

      • Nov 07 at 02:37 PM

Not worth hitting the Alert Moderator button since as you noted, there does not seem to be the sort of response one might expect. Even the ones for Wrong Tag don't get accepted even when the tag is corrected. Though in defense of the global moderators, it would appear to be a software flaw.

Nowadays, I simply write a Comment (NOT an Answer) asking the poster to search via Google the appropriate terms (which I provide). Or ask them for more information on their problem. So far, very few have responded, but I just started doing this approach. Two benefits seem to be accrued using this. First, fewer Answers being posted for passing on the same requests (which means a more appropriate count of Answered versus Unanswered Questions). Second, it makes it really apparent to any follow on potential Answerers, that the OP needs to put more effort into the Question. But very diplomatically worded in all instances.

        Cheers, Mike Appleby

        • Nov 09 at 10:13 PM

It's a software flaw. You can either delete the content, or reject the report. You can't accept the report and not delete the content. Since the new moderator rules are that deletion of content is reserved for the most severe cases, this seems to be a spectacular failure in the evaluation of fit for purpose.

Of course, in previous changes, we had a beta test area where moderators could test the new software. Since the powers that be made it clear that moderator and other input isn't required any more, and that a democractic, collaborative, consensus approach is not long wanted, this new update doesn't appear to have been tested by anyone with any experience of moderating this site.

To me, it feels like it's the current Zeitgeist.

From last month: Linus is taking a break from maintaining Linux: https://lkml.org/lkml/2018/9/16/167
    ( I’m just linking the primary source here, but I think every relevant magazine/site/newspaper wrote something about it, too;

It was all over the place, with lots of discussion, at least within my bubble - but as far as I can tell, this hasn't made it to SAP community yet? )

[I was trying not to take any position when posting this - please do let me know in case that didn’t work out!]

  • Oct 24 at 01:19 PM

Welcome to the club. I'm excited to see what will happen once all the cannon fodder (Mods) is spent.

Then again, people probably could always schedule an expert ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

  • Oct 24 at 03:59 PM

I'm sorry to hear that. But I'm so glad to still see you answering questions!

  • Nov 06 at 07:33 PM

Well, it appears with the new changes someone decided my moderation skills were no longer necessary as it appears I'm no longer a moderator.

Did I miss a communication or something that I should have responded too?

It would have been nice to have had an email that said "Thank you. But we no longer require your services."

If you follow me, you can send me a message, and I'll tell you my perspective.

The message of "Video unavailable The uploader has not made this video available in your country." or the Artist/Title - LOL

      • Nov 06 at 09:11 PM

Not quite. I was going to drop you a note but you're not messageable.

        • Nov 07 at 02:40 PM

Should work using messages.sap.com if you each follow the other. However DMs along with Notifications have had some issues when Chrome is your browser. So try FF or IE for DMs.

          Cheers, Mike Appleby

          • Nov 07 at 07:32 PM

I have the issues with FF also. But now looks like it's solved!

          • Nov 07 at 09:33 PM

            Yes, it works, thanks.

The confusing thing is we had conversations some time ago, but I followed Matthew and he DM'd me first. Since he didn't follow me I couldn't message him with a new conversation this time round.

    • Nov 07 at 08:36 AM

Wow... nice way to work with people... really...

    • Nov 07 at 08:43 AM

There's quite a difference between Matthew's decision to "I'm not moderating no more." and your discovery "Oops, I'm not moderating no more?"...Ouch!

      • Nov 07 at 02:42 PM

I would guess there are not enough yes-people (being gender sensitive) with all these negative Moderators working against the proletariat! Bring out the guillotine!

        Cheers, Mike Appleby

    • Nov 07 at 03:43 PM

Craig S there were no changes to moderator rights in the last couple of months (except a couple of specific cases where they asked to no longer be a moderator) - if you did not request removal of the rights I can have Iris Ostrin to take a look.

      • Nov 07 at 09:28 PM

That would be fine. It does look like someone is moderatoring the QM area I think. an SAP employee.

    • Nov 08 at 01:24 AM

I got a mass email thanking for services and then dropped a while back (it was more generic that there's a lot of changes going on). In fairness I wasn't active as I was switching over to my new account and swamped with work and induction. I guess it's something I have to earn back (when/if) the time comes.

I do miss the Moderator rights and not being able to fix up incorrect tags or DM people to help.

    • Nov 08 at 02:09 PM

Craig - I also tried to send you a Message, but alas as you are not following me I had a 'New Chat' dialog box open with your member profile selected, a green 'OK' button that was seemingly laughing at me every time I clicked on it...

Perhaps losing the 'M' icon is a blessing in disguise based upon this thread?

      • Nov 13 at 06:21 PM

        Possibly. :-)

I've been known to be a glutton for punishment however.

I've been doing SAP so long you kind of feel a certain kinship to it. It's like that cousin you love but at times you just have to stare in wonderment, shake your head and keep reminding yourself... "They're family...They're family...They're family...They're family..."

        .

          What!?!? ;-)

Just catching up. Haven't been here in a few months. Looks...interesting.

Personally I'll always be great-full for your expertise in QA when I was forced to dabble in it a bit. Thanks.

Just to throw my two cent in here. Feel sad to not have you around as moderator... but hey.. I can understand it and so also happy to have you around.
