Coffee or Tea ?

What's your morning fix ?

Tea or cocoa. I love the smell of fresh ground coffee beans, but I can't stand the taste of the stuff.

The only time I've been able to drink a full cup of coffee I was in Cold Weather Survival School at the Rangely Naval Air Station in northern Maine in January and I hadn't eaten in 2 days. At that point all I was focused on was getting myself around something warm and it had a bunch of sugar in it!

It is tea for me, english breakfast or Earl Grey... if I can find lemon or lemon tea to fix in - even better.

      • Sep 26, 2018 at 02:57 PM

English breakfast is good, but I can't drink Earl Grey - bergamot makes my tongue feel funny, so I'm probably allergic to it. My favorite tea, though, is a combination of vanilla black tea and almond rooibos. Right now I'm drinking a combination of Russian morning tea and chai rooibos. Rooibos has natural anti-inflammatory properties, which helps with the arthritis.

        • Sep 26, 2018 at 03:01 PM

I think russian tea is just strait up black tea from Ceylon.
At least it used to be....

Another question - what's your take on Tea/Coffee machines that use one or another form of pods ?

I like them as they provide easy mixing capabilities, so one can create weird combinations.

          • Sep 26, 2018 at 03:42 PM

On the pod-based coffee machines, so long as they have a coffee blend you like they're fine. I am a Nespresso owner. Of the many blends they offer, I only buy three, and two of those I buy for others. I have just one I really, really like (Dharkan, for anyone that knows the Nespresso range). If it wasn't for that one, Nespresso wouldn't really work for me. I have tried cheaper pod-based machines and didn't like them at all. Perhaps I'm just overly fussy?

            • Sep 29, 2018 at 08:45 PM

Yes! I also have a Nespresso. They actually make some decent coffees. The only other pod machine I liked so far was Illy. I find most other pods (e.g. Senseo) try to do all sorts of combo stuff in a pod and end up compromising coffee quality for the sake of gimmicky pods.

Dharkan is one of my favourites. Or Kazaar for the extra kick - it makes a heck of a good cappuccino too.

          • Sep 26, 2018 at 03:52 PM

This is a specific blend from Kusmi (formerly Kusmichoff) who does a number of different "Russian" blends.

As for pods, it depends on the tea that's available and the machine. For example, if the pod is a cup and the machine is also used for coffee, I usually have to run just water through it a couple of times to get all of the coffee grounds and coffee taste out before I make tea in it - usually it's too much trouble unless there's a specific type of tea available that I really want. The machines that have little pouches that "hang" in them are much better for not mixing flavors, although the seem to be less ubiquitous here in the US than the ones that take the cups.

            • Sep 26, 2018 at 03:56 PM

I've always thought that machines that make tea, coffee and hot chocolate are pretty much guaranteed to produce a blended taste that was the worst of all worlds. Anyway, tea needs to be made in a pot. Anything else is just wrong... :-)

            • Sep 26, 2018 at 05:41 PM

we had pouches machine and mixing their lemon tea with english breakfast made perfect morning cup.

          • Sep 29, 2018 at 06:50 AM

When I visited Russia a while back I was so happy to find that they know how to make good tea.

  • Sep 26, 2018 at 03:37 PM

Coffee, every time. Morning, afternoon, evening, even bedtime. I think I'm immune to caffeine! Preferably black, and without sugar, although I can take it with milk and sugar if I have to.

I can drink tea, so long as it is black. Tea with milk is just not happening. Tea with lemon, on the other hand, is very pleasant...

    • Sep 26, 2018 at 03:39 PM

I think whoever started tea with milk thing was under influence....

      • Sep 26, 2018 at 03:52 PM

        I blame the Brits... :-)

        • Sep 29, 2018 at 06:50 AM

          Guilty as charged.

The reason is that enzymes in milk reduce the bitterness of tannin. Milk must go in first for this effect, otherwise the heat of the tea destroys the enzymes before they can work. Lemon may well have the same effect. But sometimes I have tea without milk, especially something like Earl Grey.

          • Oct 02, 2018 at 12:08 PM

wait - milk goes in first, then tea is poured ?
movies lied to us all this time....

            • Oct 02, 2018 at 12:27 PM

There's even a British Standard for it. Of course, that's with a teapot and proper brewing. If you're using a teabag, you might as well brew with cheese.

Coffee, with half-and-half and some sugar. I can't drink it without those. One big cup in the morning satisfies the craving. It's so important to me that on motorcycle trips we take along a Jet Boil and a French press so that I can enjoy that first cup even if we're on a campground somewhere. (And if you are familiar with motorcycle travel, you know that those items take up precious space in the saddle bags!)

For me, tea is usually for when I am sick, and then it's with a lot of honey. For a sore throat.

Once in a blue moon I do like tea when with a friend who prefers tea, and I'll try different kinds.

    Coffee without sugar ;)

  • Sep 26, 2018 at 05:14 PM

A mug of coffee (freshly ground from whole beans) with a good helping of milk and some sugar in the morning. That's usually all during the week and perhaps some more coffee during the day on weekends.

  • Sep 26, 2018 at 06:43 PM

Coffee ... Preferably high in quality and volume. Italian or Dutch brands are my favourite, bought as beans, grinded in my coffee machine to produce a good solid cup of Coffee or an Espresso to get the morning fix ...

  • Sep 29, 2018 at 06:52 AM

Tea (black tea with milk*) first thing. Then coffee with a drop of milk once I get to work.

    * I know, sounds odd to some, but it's black tea as opposed to green tea or fruit tea.

  • Oct 03, 2018 at 05:29 PM

Black tea of course. Scottish tea will work! I drink coffee only when I have to. Nothing in either of them. Of course I do like my camel lattes - but that is few and far between.

  • Oct 04, 2018 at 03:58 AM

Coffee with tea (two cups in strict sequence) without milk/sugar/any white poison.

    No drama at all !

  • Oct 04, 2018 at 01:05 PM

Why choose, when you can have a cofftea? :-D

Filter coffee with Milk (Indian style) ;)

  • Oct 08, 2018 at 09:47 AM

What's up with all this Coffee and Black Tea?? :-)

Green tea (Sencha, Japan ofcourse) is the absolute best approach to waking up in the morning!

Brewed to perfection with 85 degrees, top quality tea that rests in the water for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Perfect color and perfect taste.

What does Sencha taste like, you might ask? It tastes like... newly cut grass! (I'm not joking) I particularly enjoy the Umami flavours in the tea! :-D (

    • Oct 08, 2018 at 11:48 AM

for a newly cut grass taste I go to my lawn ;)

there is only one tea and its black !

      • Oct 09, 2018 at 08:54 AM

Some of us don't have the luxury of our own grass-lawn, so we make due through tea methods! :-D

Bold statement, i must say! Black tea is the worst mishandling of delicate tea-leaves!

        • Oct 09, 2018 at 11:33 AM

whatever makes it easier for the child and women labor responsible for picking tea - I'm on board.

  • Oct 09, 2018 at 09:53 PM

Very strong brew with 1/3 Dark Roast (preferably Lavazza) with 2/3 strong decaf (usually Starbucks Cafe Verona). With half and half or some other kind of cream plus a little brown sugar.

Love the taste of full strength, but can't handle the amount of caffeine with the number of cups I drink.

  • Oct 12, 2018 at 04:03 AM

Although I love coffee, but in morning time I will only want Tea, sip of tea makes me feel that I am waking up now! ;)

  • Oct 25, 2018 at 02:08 AM

Coffee makes me happy more than tea... And of course coffee with bread and over easy eggs... :)

  • Nov 05, 2018 at 03:33 PM

    I'm a tea drinker :-)

Black in the morning but I love almost all the herbals, so those at night. My current favorite is vanilla rooibos (which I buy in Germany since for some reason that one we don't have in Israel). Lemon and honey if i'm sick, milk never.

I've often wished we named this the coffee/tea corner to be more inclusive lol

Dell Stinnett-Christy I love cocoa too!
