Sooo...what's new (other than the year)?

What's worse: digging out from emails or digging out from snow?

I think I might have experience with both this week.

Anyway, here I am, back from a few weeks off, and for my san(ta?)ity, I totally unplugged during the holidays. Which means that in addition to emails, I'll need to get caught up on Coffee Corner, all the Using SAP.com posts, etc.

That might take a day or two, so if there's something you need us to look into right away, please comment here.

And with that...I look forward to a great 2018 with you all!

I mean...it can't be worse than Q4 2016 and all of 2017*, right?

Well, as of mid December 2017, you sounded a bit more optimistic:

I enjoy chatting with the members — even when the criticism is harsh — and I’ll continue to fight the good fight in 2018.

Must be due to missing the community and its nice spirit for several days, I conclude:)

Ah, I'm still optimistic. It was a momentary weakness, after I found myself returning to a wish list with a bunch of SAP Community items -- in a post with more than 700 views in under 24 hours, with people adding even more items.

I mean, I thought I'd get a day or two to catch my breath. I haven't even taken down my tree yet...

Welcome back, Jerry! I was offline (completely) for a week and a half myself, but as most of my office took last week off, I came back to only 35 unread emails. Amazing! Normally that number would be anywhere from 100-200 for a week (and yes, I know some people get far more than that).

So, no digging out from either email or snow for me -- or rather, in both cases, it was relatively light digging.

Wow, 35 items? I'm jealous.

Reminds me of a funny story though...

Once upon a time, I had a colleague who took a long vacation (3 or 4 weeks...something like that), and his "out of his office" response was (I'm paraphrasing): "I don't want to come back to a bunch of emails, so I've set up Outlook to move all new emails to my trash. So I won't see what you sent. I'll be back on [date]. Please contact me after that."

I didn't know whether to admire him or be insulted. I think in the end I settled for stunned.

Daimler trialled it as a company policy. I am not 100% sure but I believe they're still doing it, the response was definitely positive.

Interesting. So maybe he wasn't the trendsetter I thought. In fact, I really got a sense of deja vu reading this: "I am on vacation. I cannot read your email. Your email is being deleted. Please contact Hans or Monika if it's really important, or resend the email after I'm back in the office. Danke Schoen."

I believe that was his message verbatim...well, except for the "please contact Hans or Monika" part.

Wow! I wish we could do that here. Instead, we have more than half of our HR staff who have a constant auto-reply that says something like "Your email is very important to me. Due to <insert current operational priority here; there's always one of them> it will be two weeks before I can respond."

Seriously, most of that department for a long time had that sent to everyone who sent them an email, at all times. I think finally someone pointed out that it didn't send a very positive customer service message, as it toned down, but there's still a culture of having auto-replies to indicate how busy you are and that therefore you won't read the email right away.

I really like that at least in 2016 version Outlook identifies out-of-office people when you put them on the addressee list. If I'd get "out of office" only after sending the email I wouldn't be very happy that it's now upon me to mark my calendar to resend it. But then again, I'm not the one who loves to blast everyone and their brother with useless emails.

It's really not that hard to manage the emails using Outlook rules. You already know who the usual offenders are. "Our wonderful company in the news this week" and "top 5 tips to stay healthy" goes into trash on the ongoing basis.

I very much recommend changing jobs in December. Most colleagues are on vacation but you are not experienced enough to be of much help in emergencies. And the users haven't yet caught the wind that you can solve some of their problems, so you're not bothered much. Works wonderfully. Just spent the whole week basking in schadenfreude about the end of year mayhem that must be going on at the old job.

Maybe take an easier job in 2018, like handling customer complaints for Puerto Rico's electric utilities? Or maybe Weinstein's outreach to NOW?

whilst your part of the world had its snow we got the hot weather. Think of it this way - at least you can add layers. There's only so many pieces of clothing you can remove before it's illegal
