I have a doubt :)

I thought I knew the difference between sorting and filtering... until today .. in Coffee Corner

Sort by Updated (Default): "56 discussions". I am too lazy to count manually, so I typed in Firebug:

document.getElementsByClassName('node-list-item kbentry-list-item')

In HTMLCollection I see 51.

Sort by Created: "56 discussions". The same result in HTMLCollection - 51.

OK, at least there is some consistency.

Sort by Hottest: "62 discussions". Erm... what? How can you have more hottest discussions than discussions?

document.getElementsByClassName('node-list-item kbentry-list-item') returns 9 items in

HTMLCollection.

Sort by Votes: "39 discussions". Are you really sure? In HTMLCollection I see 34.

Things don't add up.

Even if they somehow count the 4 blogs from here:

https://go.sap.com/community/tag.html?id=50690423538184863854226961842055

I am using Firefox ESR (latest version), which never played nice with sap.com, but still...

I am confused.

And, to make things worse, I saw similar discrepancies for SAP Answers (all questions):

    https://answers.sap.com/questions/index.html?sort=active&customPageSize=true

This is not the case in a not so obvious page with all questions (you have no filters there):

    Hi Veselina,

I suspect it's the TAG's, if anyone adds a secondary Tag those will be counted. I can see the same post in the primary tag as well as when I'm in the secondary tag forum.

I suspect those numbers change depending on the Tag's people use.

This might hold true for some refgular questions.

For Coffee Corner I know of only two tags, none of them can be selected manually, when you reate a discussion.

And sorting, the way I understand it, is reordering of items from an already known set of data. Why do I get different diferent numbers, when I sort? There are no additional filters in Coffee Corner... a mystery.

I even checked in IE11 - the result was the same.

OK, now the values are slightly different (because of my discussion), but still don't make sense.

      Updated: 57 discussions; actual: 52

      Created: 57 discussions; actual: 52

      Hottest: 63 discussions; actual: 10

      Votes: 40 discussions; actual: 35

Maybe this show more button acts weird, or the basic concept of sorting dasticaly changed after HANA was introduced... after all, we learnt about sorting in elementary or in secondary school (read as 'a long time ago'), it is possible that I am outdated. :)

I suspect there is just a random number generator behind the counters.

    • Oct 25, 2016 at 09:39 PM

But could this random generator do better than 3.4 out of 5?

      • Oct 26, 2016 at 01:17 AM

It doesn't need to - 3.4/5.0 is an average value of the perceived quality, which (I've been told) is a very complex calculation. I suspect the same generator plays a significant role in it.
