old notifications getting send again

Apologies for the latest flood of old notification. Somebody posted an extra long question, which exceeded our message size, and by that blocked a couple of message queues. After identifying the issue, we increased the message queue size, in oder to make sure we properly send all notifications. Unfortunately the queue was stuck for roughly 7 days, which is why you are seeing now old notifications being send.

We identified 2 actions from this.

Implement a TBD max body size limit for blog posts, questions, answers, and comments and inform the user in case the content exceeds this limits. For questions & answers (where this is most likely to happen) this would also mean to inform the user to use an attachment instead, because most often these are stack traces.

We will also investigate how to prevent sending notifications in case we see a similar issue occurring, to avoid this kind of spamming.

Maximum for blogs? Oh my, that could be a problem for Paul Hardy and myself. :(

which is exactly what happened here...

How long will this continue happening? It seems now like every other day even if I mark everything is read, next time I login the notifications for the last X days are unread again.

Interestingly, in the top right corner the alert for new notifications seem to have the right number of the actual new items. Since I mark the items daily, that number should correspond with unread notifications for me but it doesn't seem to be happening consistently lately.

I'm not aware of any issue like this. Let me check what is going on here. Do you see this issue only for notifications from Q&A or also Blogs?

maybe the system monitors the time you spent on the page you jump to when clicking on the notification. And if it feels like you didn't spend enough time on this page it considers you didn't read it thoroughly. And you receive the notification again. So what we consider to be a bug is actually a high-tech state-of-the-art Star Trek proof feature to ensure full reading of the content... Always Look on the Bright Side of Life

              Hi Jelena Perfiljeva,

Do you still face the issue with notifications that become unread? If yes, could you please provide the recent dates when it happened?

              Thank you,

              Maryia

It will be a problem for me as well. I tend to get wordy. :)
