S/4HANA MRP Live - #MakeMRPGreatAgain

MPR Live is a great idea but still underdeveloped and oversimplified. Let's collect and support MRP Live improvement ideas so MRP Live can live up to its promise.

MPR Live is too important to end up as yet another technical curiosity. Let's #MakeMRPGreatAgain

Introduction

One of the many innovations that S/4HANA brings is MRP Live. There are tons of blogs, technical articles and SAP official documentation on that and it is not the purpose of this article to repeat them.

Enough to say is that the paramount feature of MRP Live is a shift of number crunching from an application server to SAP HANA database in an attempt to harvest the power in-memory processing.

It is nicely illustrated by the following diagrams:

While I see MRP Live as a huge step forward, it still misses a few functions already available in MRP classic - call them "oversimplificaitons"

The intent of this article is to spark up a discussion around MRP Live, gather ideas to #MakeMRPGreatAgain and push them SAP.

I'm going to update this discussion with my ideas published as on SAP blog pages and with improvement requests provided to SAP Influence program.

You can follow and up vote the improvement requests tagged MakeMRPGreatAgain and LinkedIn post and comments #MakeMRPGreatAgain

I'd appreciate all you comments, ideas and experiences with MRP Live.

1. MRP Lists

MRP Lists are phased out from MRP Live. SAP Help advises to use stock/requirements lists instead. That is fundamentally wrong as:

  1. Stock/requirements list shows the current planning situation and MRP exceptions resulting from the current misalignment of supply in relation to demand.
  2. Whereas MRP list shows the result of MRP planning and MRP exceptions resulting from MRP planning run.

Without MRP lists MRP Live provides no tool to check, validate and manage MRP planning run results.

See S/4HANA MRP – to Live or not to Live: MRP lists for details.

2. Planning scope

The improvement request is inspired by the question Define sequence of MRP areas in MRP Live planning scope risen by Offshore Development. I have provided a work around proposal there but at the same time I have realized that the lack of planning scope or selection criteria by MRP areas is a serious deficiency of MRP Live.

MRP areas are prominent in S/4HANA. They are obligatory. They have superseded storage location MRP. Subcontractor’s stock planning relies heavily on them. In my opinion these are the changes in the right direction as MRP areas are powerful tool in MRP planning, often underutilized.

The problem is that MRP Live lacks flexibility in handling MRP areas, the scope of planning and planning sequence.

3. MRP areas of responsibility

MRP areas are prominent in S/4HANA. They are obligatory. They have superseded storage location MRP. Subcontractor’s stock planning relies heavily on them. In my opinion these are the changes in the right direction as MRP areas are powerful tool in MRP planning, often underutilized.

The key is that MRP areas are to be planned separately. Materials can be managed by different MRP controllers in different MRP areas. However MRP Live doesn't provide selection by MRP areas and all MRP areas of a plant are planned at once, together.

As result MRP controller is not able to select material assigned to them on MRP area level. MRP Live run is very likely to inadvertently plan materials assigned to other MRP controller.

I'd appreciate your comments either to this coffer corner discussion or to any of the blog articles linked above.

I wonder what your view of MRP Live is? Do you really use it, to what extend, what value does it yield?

Do you see the issue with MRP Live, where I see them?

    Cheers

The three improvement request has passed the required threshold of votes:
