[Status update] Maaaan, dat editor though!

Even if I do answer questions, the blank line eating, too-few formatting options having editor sucks the fun right out of it. -.-

Not only blank line but spaces also!

And "Paste" in Firefox always result in new line insert....

  • Feb 02, 2017 at 03:36 PM

    And still no splel ck??

Really? In this day and age? And I know Wordpress has one available. I guess they didn't want to purchase that option maybe?

And it's so weird and inconsistent. Answers to questions have different rules about blank lines than comments to blogs, and both are different to the writing of the blogs or questions themselves, which are different from each other -- I never know if I should double-tap ENTER to start a new paragraph, or single-tap it, or enter a line with a period to create a space, or....

Yes, there are several editors and each one sucks in its own way. Almost pulled my hair out when posting a blog the other day. I created a bulleted list, then tried to combine two sentences by deleting a line break (like in Word) and the formatting went haywire for several lines. Why? I always write blogs in Word and then just copy-paste but still it's quite a bit of work before posting. Double-Enter creates ginormous white space even though looks OK in the editor.

Oh, and let's not forget the commas that look like dots.

    • Feb 02, 2017 at 11:00 PM

Those annoy the heck out of me!

    • Feb 03, 2017 at 10:30 AM

I never noticed that, but now I do! :-|

reminds mit of that old xkcd:

I had to translate "kerning" and am still confused, what it means. :/

        • Feb 03, 2017 at 12:34 PM

It describes that the spacing between letters should look equal and therefore nice - NOT like the bad kerning in the Comic, where the space between the C and the E is to big!

          • Feb 03, 2017 at 12:37 PM

Ah, that. :D Yes, being a visual perfectionist, this pains me, too.

          • Feb 03, 2017 at 06:52 PM

And, Joachim, you've just outed yourself as a typography nerd. :) "Kerning" is something publishers, editors, and typographers (and perhaps authors in this day and age of self-publishing) think a lot about, but the general public, not so much. But I'm all over it when it comes up!

            • Feb 03, 2017 at 10:23 PM

Hm, in my experience developers who have to deal with the creation of (advanced) reports are probably familiar with kerning, too.

        • Feb 03, 2017 at 12:52 PM

          FWIW, there's explain xkcd - "it's'cause I'm dump":)

      • Feb 03, 2017 at 08:29 PM

LOL Joachim! I'm quite familiar with kerning since early 20s when I worked in advertising and it is truly painful to see the bad ones. :)

Edit: since my early 20s, not 1920s. I'm not THAT old. :)

It turns out, that there are several WordPress editors as plug-ins. Has anybody tried any of them personally? I know, there are these things, called reviews, in the www, but I always wonder whether they are genuine or not.
Spell-checking in browsers is not just for macs - the most common browsers have such functionality. For Firefox - if you need spell-checking for additional languages, you can install them separately from the Firefox add-ons site.

And how can the AnswerHub editor not have a quote option, come on...

And how can the AnswerHub editor not have a <em>quote</em> option, come on...

Particularly as its smaller brother "OSQA" does have that, and a working preview...

FWIW, I mis-use the "CODE" tool to quote but have usually problems to add a further line then outside the CODE - am I too dump, or is there a missing UNCODE facility? (I.e. I have not found a way to undo the CODE operation, in contrast to bold and italics and the like, it does not seem to work as a toggle...)

But my current favourite bug is when trying to edit a comment immediately after submitting that (yes, that's my way to work...) - then the "Actions" buttons shows an empty list but you can scroll down and get the entries like "Alert" once they are selected... UI blind flight:)

      • Feb 03, 2017 at 08:37 AM

I just write the text, paste the quote and then format it afterwards (when more other text follows) by highlighting the quote and then hit "code".

        • Feb 03, 2017 at 10:12 AM

Yes, that's what I'm trying to learn to, too, but it surely feels crappy...

(And now back to the forum with the working OSQA editor...)

I finally reported the action box bug yesterday:

What drives me nuts is that when I click Comment I have no idea where on screen the comment box has actually been opened. Sometimes I'd be sitting there clicking Comment 3 times before realizing oh, I have to scroll around to see where to type in text. We are talking ML and AI and can't get the 20 year old PHP forum stuff right. This is mindboggling.
